Man rescued from waters while snowmobiling home
A man was rescued early Sunday morning after he fell into a lake while snowmobiling home in unincorporated Lake Villa.
Thomas Servenfin was snowmobiling to his home in unincorporated Gurnee when he got off the trail and went into Fourth Lake of the Lake County Forest Preserve, according to ranger police.
Servenfin called for help but was eventually disconnected because he was calling from the water. Emergency crews tracked him through his cell phone signal and rescued him within an hour, Chief of Ranger Police John Tannahill said.
Grayslake Fire Protection responded to a call of a snowmobile operator in the water at 19542 W. Rollins Rd. at 2:55 a.m., according to Battalion Chief Peter Nowak. The incident was on Rollins Road and Route 45.
Servenfin, who is described to be in his late 20s, was not fully submerged in water but suffered hypothermia. He was taken to Lake Forest Acute Care Center in Grayslake where he was treated and released, Tannahill said.
Servenfin was cited for violating forest preserve ordinances, including being at the preserve after hours and snowmobiling in a lake area, Tannahill said.
Alcohol was detected although he did not appear to be intoxicated, Tannahill said.
It was not known where Servenfin was snowmobiling from.
