| Police say Wednesday morning outside a fur store in downtown Portland, 26-year-old Daniel Shaull of Dodge City doused himself in gasoline and started himself on fire. "He started walking back and forth and screaming the world is ending, they're killing animals," said one witness. The store is frequently the site of protests. Shaull's father, Warren, tells KSN that his son had mental illness and had only been in Portland for less then a week. Warren Shaull says he believes someone convinced his son to do the stunt. Meanwhile, Portland police Thursday admitted the first officer on the scene accidentally grabbed a canister of pepper spray instead of the fire extinguisher. "In fact it didn't contribute to his death, the pepper spray we use is water based not alcohol based, it is not an accelerant and the fire bureau assures us it did not make matters worse but certainly it's something that's regrettable," said Portland police chief Rosie Sizer. In response, Shaull's father says he "doesn't blame police at all, they were just trying to do their job and nobody's perfect." But Warren Shaull says he hopes police will continue to investigate what led up to his son's death. The police officer that made the mistake is taking some time off Add a Comment |
