Marchionne unveils grand ambitions | freep.com | Detroit Free Press

Sergio Marchionne, the would-be savior of Chrysler Group, emerged from a five-week corporate blackout Wednesday with a wildly ambitious plan to double car sales and pay off all of Chrysler's loans to the U.S. and Canadian governments by 2014.
And then, after a 7-hour briefing on the plan, Marchionne, in a rumpled charcoal sweater and open-necked shirt, fielded a barrage of skeptical questions with a mix of self-effacing humor and a certitude bordering on bravado.
"We've been cleaned up in the car wash," he said, referring to Chrysler's government rescue and trip through Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
"There's no need to go get muddied up again," he said, by doing stupid things like overproducing vehicles, dumping them on dealers and discounting all the profits away.
Spending to boost brands
Chrysler will invest $23 billion over the next five years to re-establish damaged brands, he said, by expanding its product lineup and rapidly refreshing stale designs with new interiors and other improvements.
