Motocross Official's throat slashed

A Motocross official with a slashed throat was among the casualties at an injury marred motocross event in Toowoomba at the weekend.
The official was rushed to hospital after his throat was cut when a motorbike smashed into him. Ambulances rushed four people to hospital with serious injuries during the indoor motocross event at Toowoomba Showgrounds on Saturday.
However, a Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said many more riders were treated on site and other injured riders were taken to hospital in private vehicles.

The spokesman said a 14-year-old rider had trouble breathing when a number of his ribs were broken, a 20-year-old was taken to hospital with a serious abdominal injury and a 16-year-old was transported with a fractured collar bone.

A 10-year-old rider was also taken to Toowoomba Hospital in a private vehicle with a fractured ankle.

The popular event, which this year featured about 330 riders, was cancelled after the race official was struck at 8.30pm.

Toowoomba Motocross Club treasurer Tye Thies said the race official, believed to be in his 40s, was hit by a motorbike while standing in position at the track’s finish line.

Mr Thies said the collision pushed the man onto the track where he was struck by another motorbike.

“It was a freak accident,” he said.

Mr Thies said the man underwent surgery over the weekend and was expected to make a full recovery.

He said the annual event was professionally run and strict safety procedures were in place, with all riders required to wear a minimum amount of protective clothing and hold a Motorcycling Queensland race licence.

“Four (ambulance) transports is low when you consider how many riders there were,” Mr Thies said.

“Of course, we don’t like to see any injuries, but it is a high-risk sport.”

The QAS spokesman said an extra ambulance crew was on duty specifically to cope with the event, however, at times the crew was too busy to even maintain contact with the Emergency Services communications centre.

“They were very, very busy on scene out there,” the spokesman said.
