NASCAR champ Johnson to appear in Santee tonight

Record-setting NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson will appear at a homecoming celebration around 7 tonight at the Lowe's Store in Santee
It will be the third of three appearances by the El Cajon native in the county today — but the only one open to the public.

At 11 this morning, Johnson will award $500,000 in grants to 11 schools during a ceremony at Crest Elementary in El Cajon, which he attended.

The awards are from the Jimmie Johnson Foundation and are from proceeds raised at the driver's third annual Golf Tournament and Charity Auction in October. Earlier events helped build four Habitat for Humanity homes in El Cajon.

At 3 p.m., Johnson will meet with Marines and their families at Camp Pendleton.

The driver, the first in NASCAR's 61-year history to win four straight championships, will then appear at the Lowe's Store at 9416 Mission Gorge Road in Santee.

Johnson will be appearing with off-road legend Ivan Stewart and seven-time national motocross/Supercross champion Rick Johnson. The event will include a question-and-answer session with fans.
