NASCAR trying to get the excitement back in racing

Big Bill France, the man who formed NASCAR more than 50 years ago, wouldn’t recognize the sport he created on the beach alongside the Atlantic Ocean.

Quote from the article:

In the last decade alone, the Winston/Nextel/Sprint Cup championship went from being decided by a grueling, season-long marathon to a 10-race playoff called The Chase. The stout stock car of America’s showrooms turned into a slick, new-fangled Car of Tomorrow, with Toyotas competing with Fords and Chevys.

And the legendary North Carolina tracks of Rockingham and North Wilkesboro gave way to such new markets as Las Vegas and Kansas City. Country was out. Corporate was in.

But those who watch today’s 52nd running of the Daytona 500 — the signature race of NASCAR — may recognize something they haven’t seen a whole lot of during the last few years.

Old-fashioned fender-rubbin’, bumper-bangin’, temper-flarin’ racing.
