The Des Moines, Iowa man, who has used a wheelchair since an accident left him with one leg, boarded a Greyhound bus Sunday morning, his ticket paid for with the kindness of strangers.
Quote from the article:
The blisters on his hands from his nearly 150-mile journey from Tallahassee to Destin will heal. But the impression the people of the Emerald Coast left on him will last a lifetime. Lewis was traveling down U.S. Highway 98 late Friday night with a small piece of luggage strapped to his wheelchair and a Gatorade bottle in his lap when a 74-year-old Miramar Beach man saw him. The man, who asked not to be named for his good deed, said he saw the potential danger of the man traveling down the road without reflectors on his chair and decided to pull over. “I try to find something I can do to help someone I don’t know everyday,” the man said. “I like to do things anonymously – I don’t do it to be recognized. There are good people out there hurting. Everyone has a hurt and I just want to help.” Lewis told the stranger that he was on his way home to Iowa and hoped to make it before winter arrived because his child was due then. He explained that he found himself wheeling his way from Tallahassee to Iowa after the bus pass he bought was lost. |
