Officials: Jet Fuel Over N.J. May Not Be A Danger
A routine flight turned into a scare in the sky – and not just for the passengers on-board.
A fully loaded 777 reported a problem after takeoff from Newark and ended up circling Somerset County, New Jersey for over an hour. The flyover wasn't the only thing that had people on the ground concerned.

Continental Flight 9 was far from business-as-usual, and Stephen Slotnick had a front row seat. "I saw the smoke trail coming out from behind it," Slotnick said. The fully loaded Boeing 777 was scheduled to fly nonstop from Newark to Japan, but plans were halted in midair when the pilot discovered problems with the hydraulics and had to turn back. Before landing, the plane circled several thousand feet above ground in Somerset County, dumping thousands of gallons of fuel, to make it safe enough to land. Slotnick saw it pass over his house and knew immediately that something was wrong. "It was alarming for me because it did have its landing gear out, and it was low," Slotnick said. The overpowering smell of jet fuel blanketed parts of Somerset County. After about an hour, the plane returned to Newark and landed safely. |
