A good Samaritan saved a disabled WWII veteran's life Thursday after he was struck by a tractor-trailer.
Felicano Quibuyen, 82, was hit by the tractor-trailer as he crossed South Azusa Avenue at Amar Road just after 9 a.m., officials said.
Quibuyen's wheelchair became tangled in fuel lines on the truck's undercarriage, West Covina Fire Capt. Curtis McCart said.
The truck dragged Quibuyen for several feet, according to witnesses.
Fortunately, a good Samaritan flagged down the truck driver, who said he didn't see Quibuyen, according to witnesses.
“That person who stopped the rig from going forward probably saved him from being run over,” McCart said. “It very well could have been a lot worse.”
Quibuyen sustained severe injuries to his face and leg and may have suffered head trauma, McCart said.
His vital signs, however, were strong, McCart said.
The former Philippine Army scout fought alongside U.S. Marines in battles for the Philippine Islands, said his friend David Villamint.
Quibuyen lost some of his mobility after two heart attacks and uses a wheelchair to get around, said his wife, Remedios Quibuyen.
The truck's markings identified it as belonging to Faraon, an Industry-based food distributor, according to the company's Web site.
Quibuyen was on his way to buy a battery for his wristwatch, said Villamint.
He was in the crosswalk, according to witnesses.
West Covina police could not be reached for comment Thursday.
It is unknown whether the truck's driver was charged with a crime.
