Police car crashes into shop window

A police car was forced into a shop window when it was sideswiped by a fleeing car after a chase in Melbourne on Monday night.
Police had stopped a white Toyota Camry in inner city St Kilda shortly before 6pm (AEDT).

The driver got out of the car to speak to police, but a front-seat passenger moved into the driver's seat and sped away.

Police chased the car several kilometres to Chapel Street in Prahran but abandoned the pursuit when it reached a speed of about 100km/h.

Police set up a car to block the Toyota's path at the intersection of Chapel and Walker streets, but the driver of the Camry tried to do a U-turn, mounted the curb and side-swiped the unmarked police car.

The impact pushed the Stonnington Traffic Management Unit car into the front window of a Rebel Sports store.

The store was closed and there were no pedestrians in the vicinity.

The police officer was uninjured but his car had to be towed from the scene.

Police are still looking for the driver of the Camry who continued on after the collision.

The original driver of the car is at St Kilda police station.
