Police Identify Man Who Fell from Bridge After Multi-Car Accident
Police have identified the man who died after he fell from the Kansas River Bridge after a multi-car accident Tuesday around 6 a.m. Police said Verner David Estrada-Duran, 35, of Merriam Kan., died after he exited his truck following the accident and tried to avoid swerving traffic by jumping over the rail, falling 50 to 60 feet.
Police icy conditions may have caused the accident and because it was still dark, Estrada-Duran may not have known there was a drop where he jumped.
Northbound traffic was down to one lane for most of the morning while Kansas Highway Patrol and police investigated. Police said the man's actions did not appear to be suicidal.
A Kansas City, Kan, fire truck retrieved the man's body near 42nd and Speaker Road and delivered him to the medical examiner's van. His family has been notified.
