Port Jefferson says "no unsightly motorcycle riders allowed"

Earlier this week, Port Jefferson Mayor Margot Garant found herself forced to take time away from work on the final budget proposal and the preparation of what could be the largest bond proposal in the history of the incorporated village in order to put out a raging fire of bad publicity.

Quote from the article:
An official-looking flyer distributed around Port Jefferson appeared to suggest a ban on "unsightly motorcyclists." Large numbers of motorcycle riders in the village are as much a sure sign of spring as are the many flowers. Bikers from around the area and the country began expressing their outrage at the language on the flyer. Garant worked the phones and email to assure those concerned that the village is not anti-biker. An apology was posted on the official village website.

On Tuesday evening, the mayor assured a group of about 100 bikers at the Village Center that Port Jeff is not biker-phobic. The motorcyclists had originally come to meet with the Business Improvement District, ostensibly the source of the controversial flyer which has since been described by village officials as the unauthorized work of a lone BID member.
