Quote from the article:
Officers were at fault for 18 of last year's accidents and 12 the year before. There were 46 accidents reported in 2007 and 47 in 2006, but due to different methods of record keeping, statistics don't reflect who was at fault. In 2005, there were 45 officer-involved accidents, 25 for which were the fault of police, statistics show. Accidents ranged from minor fender-benders to serious crashes that could've cost a few officers their lives. Officers who were responsible for the crashes were cited, police Chief Jim Billings said. In grading his officers on their driving ability, Billings said, "I'd give them a ‘B.’ " "Considering the amount of time they spend behind the wheel and the statistics, I don't think that's a terrible record." Equipped with 4.6 liter V-8 engines, police cruisers racked up more than 1.6 million miles in 2008 and 1.7 million in 2009. The majority of the accidents police were at fault for involved backing. |
