Ready For Summer? 5 Tips on How to Get Road Ready for Summer Driving Season
April is National Car Care Month, and with Summer right around the corner it's a good time to step into the garage and get ready ready for driving season. Whether you spend your summer on an extended road trip, towing your RV, racing down the quarter mile or commuting in traffic through sweltering heat, increase the performance and efficiency of your vehicle with freshly serviced cooling system, synthetic oils and fuel system cleaner.
With that in mind, the engineers at Red Line have prepared a Spring Maintenance Checklist:
1. Check the cooling system. Many modern cars often have long-life coolant engineered to last up to 100,000 miles; older cars and RVs need to have the coolant changed more frequently. Make sure the radiator is full (check while engine is cold), and the overflow tank should be filled to its indicator line. All hoses should be firm and dry. If the level is low, try using distilled water to prevent scale and mineral buildup.
2. For added insurance, try a bottle of Red Line WatterWetter®, designed to keep the coolant temperature from climbing when challenged. This product can lower temps as much as 20-degrees F by increasing the “wetting ability” of the water that comes in contact with your engine. Think of it as “road trip insurance” for cars on road trips, tow vehicles and RVs.
3. Check the oil. Many owners forget to check the level between oil changes. Make sure the oil level is full, and for longer drain intervals switch to a top-quality, ester-based synthetic. Red Line’s fully-synthetic motor oils provide the highest protection, cleanliness and superior drain intervals with the lowest friction for gasoline or diesel engines. Also note that its perfectly fine to add a quart of synthetic to conventional oils without issue.
4. Check the transmission fluid level. Most automatics have a dipstick clearly labeled in the engine compartment. Fluid should be full and clean (clear red, not brown or black). Manual transmissions should be serviced at intervals recommended in your owner’s manual. When having the transmission serviced, consider using a fully-synthetic fluid like Red Line for increased durability and wear protection. Also ensure that the fluid you select meets the specifications for your vehicle.
5. Clean the fuel system. The refineries usually change gasoline formulas to a summer blend at the start of driving season, and over time many cars develop deposits in the fuel injectors and combustion chambers. Adding a bottle of fuel system cleaner like Red Line SI-1 Complete Fuel System Cleaner for gasoline vehicles and Diesel Fuel Catalyst for diesel vehicles once a season will return your fuel system to nearly 100% efficiency by using powerful detergents and synthetic lubricants to break up deposits, clean pollution control valves and reducing detonation.
