Suzuki Unveils R3 Concept at New Delhi Auto Show

Honda and Toyota aren't the only Japanese automakers displaying small-car concepts at the New Delhi auto show. Suzuki also used the Indian venue to debut its new R3 concept, which hints at a future compact van.

The R3 may not be the largest vehicle, but still offers three rows of seating, with room for six passengers. Similar to the forthcoming Opel Meriva MPV, designers adopted rear-hinged rear doors, and deleted the B-pillar, improving entry and egress. The front four passengers receive bucket seats, but the third row is a normal bench seat.

Styling -- done completely in-house at Suzuki's Indian partner, Maruti -- isn't too extreme, but that could perhaps indicate the R3 is close to reaching production. Suzuki already has a 55-percent share of the auto market in India, and perhaps sees small vans like this as a way to help further its success.
