Swimmer struck by hit and run speedboat dies

A swimmer struck by a speedboat in a hit-and-run crash on the Murray River has died in a Melbourne Hospital.
The 45-year-old Canberra man was critically injured when he was hit by the boat between 9am (AEDT) and 9.20am (AEDT) on Thursday at Caseys Bend, between Moama and Echuca, 200km north of Melbourne, NSW Police said.

The man was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital but died there shortly before 3.40pm, police said.

"Police will prepare a report for the coroner and obviously we are still appealing for information about the speed boat and the driver and we are asking that person to come forward and speak to police," a NSW Police spokesman said.

The speedboat is described as having a white hull, a large black single outboard motor, a ski pole attached to the transom, and a small windscreen on the bow.

It failed to stop after hitting the man and was last seen being driven downstream from Echuca.

Deniliquin police are investigating.
