Toyota make 500 redundant from F1 team
Toyota have made some 500 employees redundant at their Cologne factory in Germany after the closure of their Formula One team, a spokesman said on Friday.
He said Toyota Motorsport, which ran the team and liked to boast that their varied workforce was like a United Nations of Formula One with 32 countries represented, had retained a further 150 staff.
"The redundancies have not all happened in one go but today was the last day for a lot of people," he added. "This has been a week of last days."
Toyota announced on Nov. 4 they were pulling out of Formula One with immediate effect, closing down a team that had burned through billions of dollars and yet failed to win a race since their debut in 2002.
Despite their exit, Formula One is still due to expand to 13 teams from 10 this year due to four newcomers -- Virgin Racing, Campos Meta, Lotus F1 and US F1.
