Toyota plans to pay U.S. fine, reports say

Toyota Motor Corp. on Monday will agree to pay the record $16.4 million fine levied by the U.S. Transportation Department, according to a senior official at the agency.

Quote from the article:

Toyota, which has recalled more than 8 million vehicles worldwide for defects that may cause unintended acceleration, was fined by the U.S. auto safety regulator for failing to alert the government about a gas pedal defect. The senior official asked not to be identified ahead of the announcement.

Several Japanese and U.S. news outlets reported the agreement over the weekend.

Toyota was in talks with U.S. authorities and intended to pay the fine ahead of Monday's appeal deadline, the Jiji news agency in Japan reported. But there was still a possibility it would appeal if regulators did not approve the company's plan of not admitting the allegations, it said.
