Train versus car - car wins this time, driver ok




A woman was injured but survived after her van was struck by an Amtrak train near Auburndale High School on Monday afternoon. Auburndale police said a witness told them that the woman, who was the only occupant of 2000 Ford Windstar van, went around a lowered crossing arm and the train struck the van.

The accident happened about 2:45 p.m. today near Dairy Road and Stadium Road, according to Lt. Dan Houser.
The woman was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center and was in stable condition, he said.

Houser said the woman is from Auburndale but officers have not released her name until family members are notified of the accident.
The Amtrak train was carrying about 240 passengers and 15 personnel at the time of the collision, after CSX engineers examined the tracks and signal, the train was allowed to continue on its scheduled trip about 5 p.m.
