Under 65 years old? GM to make high-performance Buick Regal GS

General Motors Co. will build a high-performance version of the Buick Regal sports sedan, which could further the brand's success in luring younger, more affluent buyers.

The Regal GS, which debuted as a concept model at this year's North American International Auto Show, could hit showrooms next year.

Quote from the article:

Tom Stephens, vice chairman of global product development, confirmed exclusively to The Detroit News that the Regal GS has been approved for production but did not offer additional details about timing or volume.

The Regal GS likely will closely resemble the concept version, which featured an estimated 255-horsepower, turbocharged, 2-liter engine; six-speed manual gearbox; and all-wheel drive.

One possible change: The production version may not include Recaro high-performance front seats, which on the concept model sported four-way lumbar support and cushion extensions.

"That is the kind of excitement Buick needs to get a new cadre of buyers into their store," said autos analyst Joe Phillippi of AutoTrends Consulting in Short Hills, N.J. "Maybe Buick won't be a four-letter word anymore."
