Volts can use Calif. fast lanes in 2012

California motorists who buy Chevrolet Volts can qualify for permits allowing them to drive solo in the state's coveted carpool lanes. But they'll have to wait until 2012.

Quote from the article:
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law this week a bill extending permits for electrics and hybrids to travel in High Occupancy Vehicle lanes. It also allows 40,000 plug-in vehicles, for the first time, to qualify for permits starting in 2012.

Pure electric vehicles already are eligible, and there's no limit on the number. The new law extends eligibility by four years for electric vehicles.

The Nissan Leaf, which will get up to 100 miles on battery power alone and will go on sale by year's end, will be immediately eligible.

The Volt is an extended-range electric vehicle that can get up to 40 miles on battery power alone before switching to gasoline power, but it's classified by the EPA as a plug-in electric vehicle.
