Is there a more American way to mark the anniversary of 9/11 than to ride around town in the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile?
Quote from the article:
That's how a double-handful of residents in Rolling Greens, a retirement community east of Ocala, spent their afternoon Saturday courtesy of Oscar Mayer and Barbara Gilbert.
Gilbert, 67, was one of four national winners in Oscar Mayer's summer contest, “If I could ride shotbun in the Weinermobile …” On Saturday, she got that chance.
“You made today very special,” she told the two “hotdoggers” — the term Oscar Mayer uses to describe the young Weinermobile drivers who shuttle the decidedly stand-out vehicle around the country.
With Gilbert in the “shotbun” seat, the Weinermobile visited Ocala's downtown square and Silver Springs attraction with Rolling Greens residents comfortably comfy in the vehicle's ketchup-and-mustard colored seats. The last time it was in Ocala was for the 2007 Christmas Parade.
“Everyone who sees us waves, takes pictures,” said hotdogger Kylie Nellis, who, with partner Brian Mallioux, will spend the next nine months traversing the Southeast in Weinermobile “Oh I Wish” — one of six sister vehicles assigned to various regions of the nation.
“It's really an American icon,” added Mallioux. “You're one of a lucky dozen who gets to drive it, it's awesome.”
