Yes you can get a DUI on a forklift in Fairbanks
A Fairbanks man pleaded guilty last week to driving a forklift while drunk.
David Samuel Stepp, 20, pleaded no contest Friday to a single count of driving under the influence. The plea came a day after he used the forklift from his work to try to free two trucks he and his friend had gotten stuck in a ditch.
Fairbanks police received a call just before 11 p.m. Thursday that a pickup truck was in the ditch on 30th Avenue, near International Street. Stepp’s friend, Joshua G. Williamson, 32, of Fairbanks, drove the truck off the road, and Stepp, who was a passenger, decided to get his own truck to free the GMC, according to Fairbanks police.
Stepp’s pickup truck became stuck as well when he tried to free Williamson’s vehicle. He then decided to get a forklift from his employer, off International Street, and use it to free both trucks.
Police arrived to find Stepp behind the wheel of the forklift, and both trucks still in the ditch.
Fairbanks police Lt. Matt Soden said he did not know which business Stepp got the forklift from.
“If you operate any motorized vehicle, whether it’s on the roadway or even private property, you can get a DUI,” Soden said.
Both men’s blood-alcohol level was more than the legal limit of 0.08 when they were arrested.
Williamson pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence.
Stepp was sentenced to serve three days in jail and was fined $1,500.
