GE, Boeing tell airlines to inspect some 777 engines for defect

Posted by: Timothy Tibbetts on: 05/16/2013 08:18 AM in Aviation

Boeing and General Electric said Wednesday they told airlines to inspect and possibly replace the engines on some Boeing 777 jets because of a potential manufacturing defect in a gearbox.

The engine-maker issued two service bulletins to airline operators after two in-flight engine shutdowns this year traced to a defect in gearboxes from a batch produced between September and March.

The Bagram Airfield Crash Video

Posted by: Timothy Tibbetts on: 05/01/2013 01:49 PM in Aviation, R.I.P, Video

Not the prettiest video here to watch, especially since the outcome is 7 people died on impact.

A cargo plane carrying 5 armored vehicles appears to just stop in mid-air and the nose goes up. Speculation is a stall and that one of the vehicles broke loose and shifted to the rear of the plane. Having spent 13 years at Airborne Express I did my fair share of plane load and balancing so as another armchair observant, this makes perfect sense to me. When I saw the plane’s nose go upward much more than it needed to and heard there was armored carriers onboard it all came together. RIP to the 7 people aboard who never had a chance.

A passenger aircraft had a narrow miss with an unidentified object over Glasgow, a report has revealed.

The Airbus A320 was making its final approach to Glasgow Airport on 2 December when an object passed about 300ft underneath it.

A report by the UK Airprox Board said investigators were unable to establish what the object had been.

Battery fix OK'd, Dreamliner step closer to flying

Posted by: Timothy Tibbetts on: 04/20/2013 06:57 AM in Aviation

Grounded 787 Dreamliner aircraft will be back in the air soon, as the Federal Aviation Administration on Friday gave pivotal approval for Chicago-based Boeing's plan to fix onboard batteries that could catch fire.

"These changes to the 787 battery will ensure the safety of the aircraft and its passengers," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement.

"This is a comprehensive and permanent solution with multiple layers of protection," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Ray Conner. "The ultimate layer of protection is the new enclosure, which will ensure that even if a battery fails, there is no impact to the airplane and no possibility of fire. We have the right solution in hand, and we are ready to go.

Scrutiny of Dreamliner batteries is not over. Next week, the National Transportation Safety Board will hold a two-day investigative hearing into the Jan. 7 Dreamliner battery fire, exploring the design, testing, certification and operation of its lithium-ion battery the fire.

Pilot makes safe landing without nose gear (Video)

Posted by: Jon Maor on: 04/04/2013 04:22 PM in Aviation, Video

Pilot Mark Crampton was able to safely land at Toowoomba airport in southern Queensland on Wednesday after the nose wheel failed to lock into place. The failure was preceded by an audible clunk when the landing gear was deployed.

Crampton and his co-pilot reportedly had to circle the airport to burn off fuel, and so that ground technicians could confirm the landing gear problem. During that time fire personnel put out foam for any type of fire that potentially could erupt upon touchdown.

At about 11:00am Crampton and his broken Beechcraft Baron 58 made their final approach, all things considered the landing was smooth. The Beechcraft sustained only propeller, and under-body damage. No one was injured in the text book emergency landing.
