Plane left on Antarctica in 1912 is found

Posted by: Timothy Tibbetts on: 01/02/2010 07:03 PM in

ADELAIDE, Australia - Remains of the first airplane ever taken to Antarctica, in 1912, have been found by Australian researchers, the team announced Saturday.

The Mawson's Huts Foundation had been searching for the plane for three summers before stumbling upon metal pieces of it on New Year's Day.

"The biggest news of the day is that we've found the air tractor, or at least parts of it!" team member Tony Stewart wrote on the team's blog from Cape Denison in Antarctica's Commonwealth Bay.

Anyone want a used space shuttle? Low miles! Cheap!

Posted by: Timothy Tibbetts on: 01/02/2010 02:15 PM in

With space shuttles still launching and landing, NASA isn't keen to talk about what will happen to the iconic vehicles after they're retired.

But the competition among institutions to land a space shuttle for public display is heating up.

Last December, NASA issued a “request for information” to educational institutions, science museums and other organizations about their interest in acquiring a space shuttle. The space agency estimated it would cost about $42 million to prepare the vehicle and deliver it via a modified 747 Boeing aircraft carrier.

Bloomberg: U.S. auto sales "probably rose" in December

Posted by: Timothy Tibbetts on: 01/01/2010 06:09 PM in Automotive

U.S. auto sales probably rose in December, signaling a recovery in 2010 after a year marked by the bankruptcies of General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC and the fewest new vehicles delivered in almost three decades.

The seasonally adjusted annual rate may be 11.1 million cars and light trucks, according to the average estimate of eight analysts in a Bloomberg survey. That would be up from 10.3 million in December 2008 and 10.9 million in November, marking the second straight monthly gain, according to Bloomberg data.

Apple COO Tim Cook Said To Be A "Top Candidate" For GM CEO Job

Posted by: Timothy Tibbetts on: 01/01/2010 03:07 PM in Automotive

Apple COO Tim Cook is executive search firm Spencer Stuart's first choice for the open CEO spot at General Motors, a reader tells us.

We have no idea whether this is true or not, but it makes sense.

Tim would be a bold choice for GM and a clean break with the car company's past. Cars are vastly different than gadgets, but the magic Apple has brought to consumer product design could be just what GM needs to turn itself around.

Kansas to cease allowing motorists to have 'duplicate' personalized plates

Posted by: DavidGP on: 01/01/2010 06:31 AM in Automotive

Kansas is revamping the way it issues vanity plates, and it means a lot of residents are going to lose their 'duplicate' personalized plates. They're not really duplicates, though: Unlike most states, Kansas allows people in different counties to have the same alphanumeric combination, so while the tags might appear to be copies, they are registered in different counties and that technically makes them different plates.

New Year's Day Is Most Active For Thieves

Posted by: Timothy Tibbetts on: 12/31/2009 05:29 PM in Automotive

It takes less time for a professional thief to break into your car, start it up and drive away as it does for you to walk into 7-11, plunk down three bucks for a bagel and coffee and emerge to watch your ride recede into the distance. And don’t presume your elderly clunker’s immune; the most stolen vehicle of 2008, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, was the 1994 Honda Accord.

“We know that thieves never miss an opportunity to make a quick buck by stealing a car,” says Joe Wehrle, president and CEO of NICB. “They work weekends, nights and holidays and ironically, they are particularly busy on New Year’s Day and Labor Day.”

Saab History Suggests A Saab Enthusiast Convoy To Detroit. Really?

Posted by: Timothy Tibbetts on: 12/31/2009 10:28 AM in Automotive

With the Saab clubs in Europe taking the initiative to set up a convoy to Saab Automobile’s headquarters in Sweden, a week after the January 7th deadline, I think us here in the United States and Canada can do something even more effective.

I think it would make much more sense for us Saab owners and enthusiasts in the United States and Canada, to organize a nice convoy to Detroit. This convoy should take place next week, arriving within hours of the GM board meeting. this is the meeting where they will ultimately decide the fate of Saab Automobile’s future.

Only 1,302 Buells left

Posted by: Timothy Tibbetts on: 12/31/2009 10:26 AM in

Despite paying dealers a $5,000 incentive on every Buell sold, there's still 1,302 of "America's sportsbike" remaining at the time of writing. Harley really, really, really wants you to buy one. To help, it's set up a bike finder detailing the numbers of specific models remaining and their location. Expect very good deals.

In other news, the last Buell ever made, an XB12Scg was donated to the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum in Alabama. Someday, a father will point at it and explain to his son, "Yes Timmy, America once did produce good motorcycles."

Vespa "Limousine"

Posted by: Timothy Tibbetts on: 12/31/2009 08:12 AM in

Vespa’s South African division had this stretch scooter made as a promotional gimmick (congratulations). They refer to it as a family-sized vehicle:

According to Vespa, here’s a list of uses for the stretched scooter: it’s a sensible family car on two wheels and kids will look forward to going to school on it. You can be the designated driver and still park outside the front door of the party. When you make new buddies, you can take them home with you – and you save money on fuel.

It’s a custom job, so don’t rush down to a dealership expecting to find one.

Of course, there's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmy Johnson, who won his unprecedented fourth straight championship. He accomplished what no other driver in NASCAR's long history had achieved, overshadowing Mark Martin's storybook season.
