A multimillion dollar yacht went up in flames today at a Daytona Beach yacht club, and investigators are trying to figure out what caused the blaze.
The owner of the 71-foot boat, Motor Yacht Princess Lauren, was in the shower a little after 7 a.m. when he heard a popping and booming noise coming from the master bedroom closet, Daytona Beach battalion Chief Dru Driscoll said.

The man tried to extinguish the flames himself, and then people around him at Sunset Harbor Yacht Club & Conference Center ran to help, Driscoll said. No one was injured. Firefighters were summoned about 7:20 a.m. and found a large column of black smoke rising from the Princess Lauren, they said. Their work was complicated partly by 500 rounds of ammunition and a handgun the owner kept onboard that started popping as the heat became more intense, they said. The state Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire. |
