Paul Charles Caravello (July 12, 1950 – November 24, 1991), known as Eric Carr, was an American musician, best known as drummer for the rock band KISS. Caravello was selected as the new Kiss drummer after Peter Criss left the band in 1980. He remained a band member until he became ill with heart cancer and died in 1991.
Here's your chance to own Eric Carr's personal 924 Porsche given to him by KISS as a contract signing bonus upon joining the band in 1980. It is for sale at KissMuseum.com. As most car lovers know, these are not highly sought after, nor do they hold their value well. They were ugly and designed by Porsche for Volkswagen and intended to be their flagship coupe sports car. Due to the 73 oil crisis, Volkswagen decided to go with the Scirocco model instead and Porsche, needing a 914 replacement at the time bought the design. The car was a slug, with only 95-110 horsepower. Later on came other models including the Turbo and S models but as the reputation goes, this car was already damaged goods as a collector item goes.
Price for these on Ebay currently range from just over 300 dollars for a parts car up to a Buy It Now price of $5,000. I saw one for sale about 5 years ago and laughed at his $5,000 price so considering the economy, I doubt it has gone up in value. Having Eric Carr own it would add to the value more if it was a cool car, but in this condition anything over $5,000 seems foolish to me.
Also, the 20th anniversary of his death will be on November 24th 2011 (feel old yet?) and a book has been released detailing his life. Might just have to grab this on Kindle, Eric lived an exciting, short life. Here are the details on the book:
“'The Eric Carr Story' is the first-ever book to tell the life story of Kiss drummer Eric Carr. Comprised of all-new interviews, the book also doubles as a study of 1980's era Kiss. You'll find insight into all of Kiss' albums that featured Carr (from producers Bob Ezrin, Michael James Jackson, and Ron Nevison), as well as those closest to him (sister Loretta Caravello, girlfriend Carrie Stevens, Kiss guitarist Bruce Kulick), and music-related friends (Eddie Trunk, Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy, Anthrax's Charlie Benante). Also included is one of the last-ever interviews conducted with Kiss' original manager, Bill Aucoin, and for the first time ever, Kiss fans will be able to learn what the real story line to Kiss' controversial release '(Music From) The Elder' was all about (thanks to an explanation from Ezrin). Get ready to learn the true story about Eric's life, and a behind-the-scenes view of Kiss!”
